Vicinity of Kuta

Posted under: Bali In General

North of Kuta
At low tide, bicycle rides or walks along the firm, moist sand are refreshing. Heading north of Kuta, you can ride for about seven kilometers before the sand changes and will no longer support a bicycle. At this point either retrace your tracks, or turn inland at the thatched roots of Seminyak’s Bali Oberoi and return to Kuta via Jl. Legian.

The Oberoi is no longer the last tourist bastion, beyond which few people besides the occasional fisherman are seen. Although the new tourist accommodations springing up north of Legian in Petitenget, Batubelig, Canggu, and Pererean bring more and more people to previously isolated beaches, the crowds thin the farther north you get. If you’re walking or riding northwest all the way to Tanah Lot, you have to cross several rivers and stretches of deep black lava sand where the coast is rocky and not suitable for swimming.

If you walk north far enough (about 2.5 hours), you will run into the sacred sea temple of Pure Petitenget, which is made completely of white coral. Founded by one of the first Javano-Hindu holy men to visit Bali, Sanghyang Niaratha.

Legian
This once dusty, poor seaside village is now just an extension ot Kuta, though with slightly  more chic energy. Legian offers good music, outstanding food, both luxury and budget hotels, sophisticated fashion boutiques, banks, souvenir markets, and arja, barony, kecak, and Ramayana performances at least every other day. From Denpasar, Legian is easy to reached, or a two-km walk from Kuta Beach on a congested sidewalk beside a busy road running south. It’s more pleasant to walk via the beach, then cut in at Jl. Padma.

Canggu
Known for sunbathing and surfing, Canggu is for those looking for a quiet beach. Life is easy and relaxing. The waves here are big, though. Don’t swim during high tide and you must be a good swimmer to swim any other time.

Fisherman here still use the beach and sea for their livehood. Take a walk to the north and you will fun into some important and attractive sea temples and more fishing villages where life goes on relatively undisturbed.

Batubelig
All the hotels in this neighborhood are luxury amid seclusion. A prime example is Balisani Hotel on Jl. Padma Utara on the same quiet and out-of-the-way road as the Rama Garden Cottages. Competitively priced for its class, this small, alluringly designed hotel has a sort of faded, crumbling charm to it—like a poor man's version of a Nusa Dua hotel. Their restaurant looks over the pool, Very good and varied breakfast and mostly Western menu, but slow, dreamy service. Water sports, including surfing, can be easily arranged, but no swimming in the sea out front as the undertow is too treacherous. You’ll need either their taxi or shuttle services, which run from - 0900-2100 five times daily, as Legian is five km and Kuta eight km away.
