Travelling with Baby

Posted under: Bali In General

Bali is a great place to take the kids. The Balinese are extremely fond of children (not so in Flores where they touch, pinch, and even throw stones). Western children really get into the Balinese culture and feel its spirituality and understand its unique legacy to the world very quickly.

There’s always plenty to occupy them, and they’ll be healthy and safe. It’s also cheap to take them because you pay only two-thirds the airfare for your child (if under 12). The long, disorienting flight from Europe or the States is the worst part of the whole trip.

If you say you’re over 20 years old, and don’t have any children, the Balinese pily you. In fact, to answer with an outright ‘No!’ is too blunt; say instead belum (nol yet) or di hotelnya (back at the hotel).

With young children, you’ve got to be patient, creative and flexible. Don’t be on the move all the time. Accommodate your children’s needs, or they won’t have any fun and neither will you. Establish rituals around mealtimes, clean up, family meetings, study plans, and nighttime story to provide structure.

Have your kids always wash their hands thoroughly before eating or attar going to the toilet. Bring sterilizing airplane wipes or alcohol anti-bacterial wipes for this purpose. Don’t let them run around barefoot because worms and other parasites from infected excrement enter through the feet. Carry baby wipes for those times when soap and water aren’t available. Loose cotton pajamas covering most of the body or a tucked-in mosquito net keep a child from getting bitten by mosquitoes during the night.

Bring an infant analgesic, medicine dropper, thermometer, sun block, and hat. Take a car seat if you’re going to be there a long time. Also bring a good child’s motorcycle or bicycle helmet. Some transport is freaky because there are usually no seatbelts, so pay extra and get a Toyota Avanza or Toyota Kijang Innova with seatbelts. All medicines and baby accessories (Vaseline, baby wipes, baby powder) are available in the tourist-oriented shopping centers of Bali. Buy Dial or Fisher-Price liquid soap.

If you’re into herbal medicine, homeopathy, vitamins, bring it all with you. Your kid probably won’t get sick, but if she does, take her to a local clinic as soon as possible.
